A talented young artist from Domboshava has transformed his passion for art into a profession with the guidance that provided him with training, support and encouragement.
Kutenda Mupedza, a 22-year-old artist began his art work in high school, where he discovered his love for drawing and mastered diverse artistic styles and techniques to elevate his work beyond the confines of a single genre.
Drawing inspiration from multiple movements including realism, impressionism, expressionism, abstract art, surrealism and cultural art, Mupedza seamlessly blends tradition and modernity, giving his paintings a unique and captivating appeal.
His expertise with various mediums from oil and acrylic to watercolour and traditional Shona calabashes, showcases his versatility as an artist.
Speaking to Zimpapers, Mupedza said with Keith Zenda and other mentors helping him, he aspires to further his skills with formal training and support.
“He was a pillar of strength and guidance in my artistic journey, very invaluable as he provided me with the knowledge, expertise and support necessary to grow as an artist.
“I spent countless hours at his studio, Zenda Art Gallery and Paint Shop, learning from his wisdom and developing my own style,” he said.
Mupedza said despite facing challenges after his father’s death, he persevered and honed his skills, earning recognition for his work.
“My father’s death in May 2015 was devastating for me and my family but my mother’s strength was hopeful as she stepped up and took on the role of sole provider and caregiver, ensuring my sisters and I were cared for.
“While there were some who mocked me and my aspirations, I did not let their words deter me.”
He emphasised that his big breakthrough came when he visited the National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe.
“My breakthrough moment came when I went to the National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe and met a lady who knew my father.
“I participated in the group exhibition in Shanghai, China, which was an incredible opportunity to share my work with the world and represent Zimbabwe on an international stage was an honour.”
Mupedza said the feedback he received was overwhelmingly positive and validated his hard work.
