A group of 12 officers from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Mashonaland West Province has completed a two-week intensive training course on water workmanship at the Kariba Boat Squadron.
The team was made up of five women and seven men.
The Zimbabwe National Army conducted the course, which is designed to enhance the officers’ skills in water-related operations.
Officer Commanding Kariba Boat Regiment, Colonel Pachavo Munangarwa was the guest of honor at the certificate presentation ceremony.
Colonel Munangarwa highlighted the importance of such specialised training in safeguarding the nation’s water resources and ensuring the security of the country.
He underlined the critical role that the trained officers will play in future waterborne operations.
“This invaluable training has equipped participants with essential skills and knowledge that will significantly enhance our ability to respond to disasters in the Lake Kariba area,” he said.
“With its unique challenges, including potential flooding and environmental hazards, being trained in effective swing techniques ensures that we are better prepared to conduct rescue operations and provide assistance during emergencies.
“The collaboration between law enforcement and local communities will foster a more resilient response system, ultimately safeguarding lives and property in this vital region. Your commitment to our safety and preparedness is truly commendable.”
Acting Officer Commanding for Kariba District, Superintendent Saul Mhlaqwa commended the officers for their dedication and stressed the need for ongoing skills development within the police force.
“We do not doubt that this training will benefit not only individual officers but also the entire community,” he said.
“The skills gained will enhance our collective preparedness and response to emergencies, thereby fostering a stronger, more resilient environment for everyone.
“Furthermore, we are excited to share that these officers will participate in this year’s Commissioner Gala, showcasing their commitment to community engagement and collaboration.”
One of the trainees, Freeman Chiromo spoke passionately about the course, expressing his belief that the skills acquired will greatly enhance effectiveness in his line of duty.
“This training was invaluable. It equipped us with the necessary expertise to perform our duties in challenging water environments,” said Chiromo.
One of the instructors, Sergeant Shawn Chikoho appealed to authorities to ensure that officers are well-equipped to do their job.
“Having the right tools and resources is essential for the trainees to apply their newfound skills effectively so that they produce the best possible results,” said Sergeant Chikoho.
