A 26-year-old man will spend the next 12 years in prison after being convicted of raping his teenage neighbour.
Donald Dondo was convicted after a full trial by Harare regional magistrate Clever Tsikwa.
He was initially sentenced to 15 years imprisonment, but three years were suspended on condition that he doesn’t commit a similar offence in the next five years.
The State proved that on January 18, the complainant, who is 16, was sent to buy airtime by her grandmother.
She met Madondo on her way to the tuckshop.
Madondo asked her to wash his dishes but she refused, telling him she wanted to do her homework.
He then grabbed the girl and dragged her to his house.
When he got into the kitchen, he sent his young brother to go and collect some money from their father.
Madondo then took the girl to his bedroom and raped her.
She managed to free herself and fled from the house.
Madondo followed her and ordered her not to tell anyone about the rape.
But, she went home and told her grandmother, who reported the matter to the police leading to his arrest.
