A Chitungwiza man was on Sunday arrested for allegedly killing his uncle, who was a drug and substance abuse victim.
It is alleged that Henry Gatsi, 62, teamed up with his tenant, Prossy Dimson, 34, to assault Luke Mafiyata, who was said to have twice escaped from a rehabilitation centre. Luke later died from injuries sustained during the assault.
One of the family members, Ketai Gatsi, 64, said Henry and his accomplice assaulted Luke several times under the feet using a baton.
Ketai said Luke was taken to a rehabilitation centre at around 10am, following his drug abuse. At about 1pm, Luke escaped from the centre and returned home.
“He was confronted for escaping from the rehabilitation centre. He was then assaulted several times on the feet using a baton,” Ketai said.
Ketai added that the injuries left Luke with swollen feet. At around 2.30pm, Luke was taken back to the rehabilitation centre.
At about 4pm, family members received information from the rehabilitation centre authorities that Luke had been taken to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital for medical examination due to the severe pain he complained of after the assault.
Luke later died at around 6pm, Ketai said.
The body was conveyed to the hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
