ALERT constables in Bulawayo arrested suspected cattle rustlers who were delivering stolen beef to a butchery in Pumula East suburb.
The self-driven initiative of the constabulary resulted in the arrest of Jethro Dube (40) from Cowdray Park and Itai Gwasura (36) from Pumula East.
A Third suspect, Jaison Ndlovu, escaped when he realised his friends had been cornered.
At approximately 3 PM, Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube said in a statement, that police officers were having lunch at a local butchery in Pumula East when they observed a suspicious white Honda Fit parked nearby.
The vehicle, occupied by the three suspects, prompted police intervention after its boot was found loaded with cattle carcasses.
The occupants were unable to produce a permit, leading to their immediate arrest, while Ndlovu escaped.
Further investigations led the police to Gwasura’s residence, where they recovered offal, two ox heads, around 50 kg of steak, and eight hooves. Gwasura revealed that the carcass had been brought from Village 4, Nyamandlovu, by Dube and Ndlovu. The suspects later directed police to the site where the slaughtering occurred.
Insp Ncube reiterated the importance of purchasing meat from registered abattoirs to ensure public health and safety.
He urged the community to report illegal meat sales and avoid buying uninspected products. Insp Ncube said police are seeking information regarding Ndlovu’s whereabouts, and he encouraged anyone with leads to contact ZRP Pumula at 0292-422907 or the nearest police station.
