TWO police officers stationed at Entumbane Police Station have been arrested and appeared in court facing charges of assault and theft.
The incident allegedly took place on 13 March at Entumbane Police Station.
The duo, Constables Guide Kasu (35) of 866 Old Magwegwe and Richmond Nyaruwo (30) of 29 Block Z, Ross Camp appeared before magistrate Ms Learner Khumalo for a routine remand hearing last Thursday at Western Commonage Magistrates’ Court where they were further remanded out of custody to 14 July.
According to the State’s case as presented by prosecutor, Ms Ellen Matenga, the duo attacked the complainant, Canaan Phiri of Mpopoma, at around 8.45pm on the evening of 13 March after they allegedly dragged him into an empty cell at Entumbane Police Station.
Phiri had gone to the station to see his ex-wife, who was on duty with the pair at the station, to discuss the custody of their children.
The two then began to argue and the complainant was heard insulting his ex-wife who was in the presence of the two accused.
Kasu allegedly manhandled and punched Phiri with a clenched fist on the left ear and kicked him twice on the left side of the rib cage after which Nyaruwo helped Kasu to drag Phiri into a holding cell, where they beat him until he lost consciousness.
The two then allegedly searched Phiri and stole US$340 from him.
Phiri only discovered that his money was missing when he woke up and made a report to the police leading to the arrest of the duo.
Phiri sought medical assistance and the report was presented as an exhibit, which states that he was found to have suffered a fracture of the sixth rib.
The medical report suggests that the injuries may have been caused by a blunt object with moderate force resulting in serious injuries.
