THREE suspects have been arrested by police in connection with an armed robbery in Bulawayo, during which cash, jewellery, firearms and ammunition were stolen from a family on Monday.

Two of the suspects, Alex Cabangani Moyo (37) and Vusumuzi Moyo (27), were arrested following a shootout, the second of which left two detectives and a woman injured.

A third suspect, Mlungisi Sibanda (44), had been detained after police detectives received information connecting him to the robbery.

The police have appealed for information on the whereabouts of another suspect, Simelweyinkosi Dube.

National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the arrests.

“This is in connection with a case of armed robbery where three family members were attacked before US$7 800 cash, jewellery worth US$200, a Bulawayo Agricultural Show Society trophy, 15X9mm live ammunition, FN 9mm Pistol loaded with 13 rounds, Cadix 0.38 revolver and an empty magazine were stolen,” he said.

“On Monday, detectives from CID Homicide arrested Mlungisi Sibanda in the Bulawayo city centre, along Jason Moyo Street, after receiving information which linked him to the robbery case.

“The suspect implicated Alex Cabangani Moyo leading to his arrest in Cowdray Park on Tuesday.”

Ass Comm Nyathi said the arrest led to the recovery of two pellet guns, a 9mm Pak Retay Mod 92 firearm with five rounds and a Bulawayo Agricultural Show Society trophy.

“Alex Cabangani Moyo implicated Vusumuzi Moyo, leading to his arrest at a house in Nketa 9, Bulawayo, after a shootout.

“Vusumuzi Moyo implicated Simelweyinkosi Dube (28) and led detectives to Simelweyinkosi Dube’s girlfriend, Siwinile Ndlovu’s residence in Cowdray Park where Simelweyinkosi managed to escape after a shootout.”

Ass Comm Nyathi said Simelweyinkosi used Siwinile as a shield during the shootout.

“As a result, Detective Assistant Inspector Richard Charamba (47) and Detective Constable Albert Madziva (41) as well as Siwinile were injured and are admitted at Mpilo Hospital.”
