Two members from the same family in Gokwe in the Midlands died while 26 others are lucky to be alive after consuming a concoction during a traditional cleansing ceremony that went wrong at their homestead.
Mharadza Mandaza and Mhere Mandaza allegedly drank a concoction that they were given together with 26 other family members by 52-year-old self-styled traditional healer, Simbisai Mapuranga of Rumwe, Kadoma, who they had hired to conduct the ceremony last Saturday at around 4am.
Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said police were hunting down the traditional healer and his accomplices.
Mapuranga allegedly prepared 20 litres of a concoction which he ordered every member of the family to drink after confessing.
All 28 members of the family who were present allegedly confessed and drank the concoction, after which they vomited and became unconscious for about three hours.
The rest of the family members regained consciousness, but Mharadza and Mhere remained unconscious until Mapuranga and his team left for Kadoma.
The matter was reported to the police and the two bodies were taken to Gokwe North Hospital for post-mortem.
Insp Mahoko appealed to the public who might have information that may lead to the arrest of Mapuranga and his accomplices to report at any nearest police station or make use of suggestion boxes. – New Ziana.
