TWO Malawi nationals who were headed for South Africa have been arrested at the Plumtree Border Post for illegal migration.

Nthungo Sumaili (47) and Tobiasi Sofati (22) both of Lilongwe gained entry into the country through an illegal point at Nyamapanda Border Post on November 4.

They were both convicted on their own plea of guilty to entering the country by evasion by Plumtree magistrate, Mr Livard Philemon. They were each fined $200 with the option of spending two months in jail if they default on paying the fine.

Prosecuting, Mrs Rose Sibanda said the pair entered the country illegally after being denied access by immigration officials.

“On 4 November Sumaili and Sofati arrived at Nyamapanda Border Post but they were refused entry by an immigration officer as they didn’t meet the necessary requirements.

“They went on to enter the country through an undesignated entry point. On 6 November they went to the Plumtree Border Post seeking permission to leave the country. Upon examining their passports immigration officials noticed that they had been denied entry at Nyamapanda Border Post,” she said.

Mrs Sibanda said officials requested visitor’s entry certificates from the two Malawi nationals but they failed to produce them leading to their arrest.

The two men pleaded for leniency and told the magistrate that they were in transit to South Africa.
