WAR veterans are in the process of mobilising two million people to march in Harare before elections in show of support for President Mnangagwa, War Veterans League Secretary Cde Douglas Mahiya has said.
Cde Mahiya, who was in Bulawayo yesterday to address a war veterans rally, said the elections would herald a new beginning for the country.
Cde Mahiya said the march in the capital was also meant to garner votes for President Mnangagwa and Zanu-PF in the forthcoming harmonised elections.
He said this while addressing hundreds of war veterans, war collaborators, ex-political prisoners, detainees, restrictees and children of war veterans at Stanley Square in Bulawayo’s Makokoba suburb.
The rally was also attended by Zanu-PF politburo member and former Cabinet Minister, Retired Colonel Tshinga Dube, Zanu-PF politburo member Cde Molly Mpofu and Cde Cephas Ncube the provincial chairman of the war veterans wing.
Cde Mahiya said the war veteran’s fraternity has grown over the past years as it has managed to attract grandchildren of freedom fighters because of its strong ideologies and ethos.
“We have become united after the formation of the war veterans’ league under the Second Republic led by our visionary leader President Mnangagwa. We are now working together towards mobilisation of votes for President Mnangagwa and Zanu-PF.
“We are glad to have identified grandchildren of war veterans whose responsibility is to safeguard our hard-won independence. I came here today to remind them about their constitutional mandate of mobilising all other grandchildren of war veterans including those who were on the way-side, to participate in the campaigning team and national development,” said Cde Mahiya.
He said he expected Bulawayo to contribute a mammoth crowd of 200 000 people for the solidarity march, which he said will be held in August before the elections.
Cde Mahiya said he was holding meetings throughout the country in order to canvas and garner votes for President Mnangagwa.
“About 1,4 million people from the war veterans’ side including spouses, children, grandchildren and all those who grew up under the custodians of war veterans are part of us because they naturally inherited liberation ideology,” he said.
Cde Mahiya said it was high time Zimbabwe stood its ground as one of Africa’s liberation leaders.
“This expedition is aimed at reviving the strong spirit of liberation that guided our forefathers and freedom fighters. The country must be guided by revolutionary principles that helped liberate the country.
“People have to be reminded that Zanu-PF is an organisation that fought for the freedom we are enjoying today,” said Cde Mahiya.
He urged war veterans to claim a portion of the country’s wealth by participating in national development programmes.
“Let us encourage each other to be actively involved in programmes that develop and transform communities. The youths should lead the way because they are the future leaders who should start enjoying the country’s resources now.
“We want to impart knowledge to them on the importance of safeguarding the country’s wealth such as minerals, land and other natural resources. It is your right to claim a portion of the country’s fortunes but this can be done through organised Government programmes that will also benefit future generations,” said Cde Mahiya.
He also urged people to fight corruption from all levels and said people should strive to live an honest life.
