TWO minors in Chipinge died last week after the hut they were sleeping in caught fire.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident.

He said the fire incident happened in Musikavanhu area after the two minors retired to bed in a grass-thatched hut which was adjacent to their mother, Ms Janie Ngombe’s hut.

Later that evening, Ms Ngombe was awakened by a crackling sound. She rushed out of her bedroom hut and discovered that the hut in which her two children were sleeping in was on fire.

“When she tried to open the door, she discovered that it was locked from inside. She was unable to force-open it. One of her neighbours, Mr Governor Simango rushed to the scene. He kick-opened the door. He managed to rescue one of the two siblings from the burning hut. By the time the fire was extinguished, the other sibling was already dead.

“Upon being interviewed, the girl who was rescued said before they retired to bed, they had used a piece of burning firewood to provide light. It is suspected that the two slept without extinguishing it. She was referred to St Peter’s Mission Hospital where she was transferred to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital. She died after admission,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
