TWO Mutare smugglers were lucky to survive after their truck ferrying 20 bales of smuggled second-hand clothes overturned while attempting to flee from police manning a roadblock in Chipinge last Friday. Police confirmed the accident which happened at the 161km peg along Tanganda-Ngundu highway and said the two were expected to appear in court this week.

Chipinge District police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Blessing Kadzuraumera said Colleen Mafuya of Dangamvura and January Garikai of Chikanga Phase 1 were arrested on their way to Chiredzi where they wanted to resell the smuggled clothes.

He urged members of the public to go through official points of entry after purchasing goods from outside the country. He said those behind smuggling syndicates would be arrested while their goods would be forfeited to the State.
