TWO people died on the spot while 12 others were injured when a commuter omnibus they were travelling in burst a tyre before hitting a lamp post. The kombi, which was carrying 18 passengers, was travelling from Kuwadzana to the city centre when the accident occurred at around 5:40am hours near the National Sports stadium.

According to police, the kombi burst a rear left tyre, veered to the left of the road and hit a lamp post killing two people, the driver and one passenger, on the spot.

Police national spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident.
He however, could not name the deceased because their next of kin were yet to be notified.

“Two people, one of them, the driver lost their lives in commuter omnibus accident near the National Sports Stadium this morning (yesterday),” he said.

“What is of great concern to us, however is the age of the now deceased driver who was aged 21.
“This is way below the stipulated age for a public transport driver. We are in the process of investigating the matter.

“If it is found that the owner of the vehicle was negligent by recruiting a driver who does not meet the requisite qualifications then we have a case against him or her,” Chief Supt Nyathi said.

He urged all transport operators to recruit qualified drivers to avoid more loses of lives.
