TWO Zimbabweans died on the spot at the weekend in a road accident that occurred near Kalomo town, Zambia, when a Lusaka-bound commuter omnibus they were travelling in burst its rear tyre and overturned.
Eight Zambians also sustained serious injuries in the Saturday morning accident. Media reports in Zambia said the vehicle – a Toyota Noah – was travelling from Livingstone to Lusaka when the driver lost control of the vehicle following a tyre burst.
Reports say two Zimbabweans were thrown out of the vehicle and died after sustaining serious head injuries.
The deceased were identified as Noel Moyo, 53, and Marko Phiri, 32, both from Mkhosana Township, Victoria Falls. The two were on their way to Tanzania to collect their vehicles.
Zambian southern province police chief Charity Katanga yesterday confirmed the accident that happened at the 16km peg from Kalomo town centre along the Livingstone-Lusaka highway. She identified the driver as Sianzu Moonga, 21.
“The driver lost control and the vehicle overturned in the middle of the road. The deceased have been identified as Noel Moyo, 53, and Marko Phiri, 32, of the same area (Mkhosana Township, Victoria Falls). Both sustained head injuries,” she said.
The eight injured passengers were admitted to Kalomo General Hospital.
