Pupils from across Tynwald Primary and Secondary schools recently took time to celebrate the life and legacy of the late national hero General Vitalis Musungwa Gava Zvinavashe, founder of the two elite learning institutions with a host of activities. Parents, friends and relatives joined the school to mark the seventh anniversary of Gen Zvinavashe’s death. The late hero made singular contributions not only to the political freedom of Zimbabwe, but also contributed immensely to the country’s education sector.

Gen Zvinavashe died on March 10 2009 at the age of 66 and was buried at the National Heroes Acre.

It is now a culture for the schools each year to have 66 minutes of community work.

The school headmaster Mr Kerias Matimba led the boys to fill troublesome and potentially dangerous potholes along the roads in the vicinity while girls picked litter.

Pupils also planted trees in the school yards.

Some students who spoke to these reporters said were happy with how the school is developing as it will go a long way in boosting the education sector.

They also said that their individual development is on the right path given the calibre of their teachers.

Deputy headmaster Mr Silas Nyamasve spoke on the importance of the annual occasion saying Gen Zvinavashe left an indelible mark in the country’s political and education landscapes.

“It is a commemoration where we give honour and tribute to the founder of the school,” said Mr Nyamasve.

“We organise and take part during the function and visit his shrine. The legacy of Gen Zvinavashe also teaches us to be selfless and give back to the communities we live.”

Mr Nyamasve also urged pupils to guard jealously the legacy of the late revolutionary and derive inspiration from his vision to empower children with education.

“We are committed to producing top results and successful students,” he said.

While Gen Zvinavashe is a reminder of the country’s political history, the schools he founded are an embodiment of the revolution just as its founder was.

Both schools with a combined enrolment of more than 800 provide high quality academic education with an emphasis on all round development.

The University of Zimbabwe conferred Gen Zvinavashe with Honourary Doctorate of Letters Degree on August 203 after carefully considering his role in emancipating Zimbabwe.

Three years later, on August 15 2006, President Mugabe conferred upon him the Grand Commander of the Zimbabwe Order of Merit.
