The International Tennis Federation accepted Zimbabwe’s request to have the Zimbabwe Open tournament get Futures’ status on the basis that they hold two tournaments, one after the other, but the national association do not have enough funds to cater for both events.
TZ administrator, Cliff Nhokwara, had a meeting yesterday with some of the potential sponsors but he said they had not come up with anything yet.
“We had a meeting but nothing came out. We are meeting again next week on Wednesday. The sponsors have said they are still digesting and that doesn’t look good,” said Nhokwara.
Nhokwara said in the event that they do not get a sponsor, the tournaments will be moved to next year but the Zimbabwe Open will be held in November without points.
“The Zimbabwe Open is guaranteed, there is a contract already signed. However, it will be held without points because the requirement is that we hold two tournaments, one after the other. The sponsors really want to get involved but the challenge is that they did not have the provision for this year and they need to incorporate it into their finances. We are now left with three months this year of which November is the only month left possible to have the tournaments and if we fail to get the sponsorship it will be moved to next year,” said Nhokwara.
