THE national football girls Under-15 team set to compete in the Africa Youth Champions to be staged in Gaborone, Botswana, next year trooped into camp on Sunday at the Zifa Village to start their preparations. The team is conducting a seven-day camp to prepare for the championships penciled for May in Gaborone and training entered day two yesterday at Barclays Sports Club in Mount Pleasant.
Zimbabwe were invited by the hosts, Botswana, to take part in the championships. Team coach, Prosper Manzunga, said they were happy to start preparations early as it will give them time to asses all the players.
“We started our selection around October and we are continuing the selection process until we get to the last camp which is in April.
“So, there will be intervals in terms of campings and in terms of the games there will be a lot of teams from African countries that will be there.
“I think it’s high time we expose our girls to the Championships.
“I think we have just done the good thing to start preparations now when there is no pressure. Everyone wants to be involved and the selection is a process not a one day thing.
“We will try to hold maybe two or three camps before the main camp in April so that we assess more players, that is what we want,” said Manzunga.
Manzunga said they were hoping to have all the players when they hold the next camp as some of them failed to make it due to financial challenges.
He added there was a lot of work that needs to be done.
“There is lot of work to be done but what I am impressed with is the (players) will learn. Everything you put to them they want to do it for you, I think it can also make them better players.
“They are making a lot of mistakes as kids, you need to do a lot of repetitions so that they understand what you are trying to say to them,” said Manzunga.
