THE United College of Education will host the Aids Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Zimbabwe First Anniversary Tournament on October 7.
Other teams that have been invited to participate at the tournament and joining the hosts in the inaugural event in Bulawayo are Bulawayo Polytechnic College, National University of science and Technology and Westgate.
Sporting disciplines that will be contested are football, volleyball, netball and basketball both men’s and women’s teams.
Speaking to Sunday News Sport, the country programme manager of AHF Zimbabwe, Enerst Chikwati said UCE has been confirmed as the venue for the competitions. The institution has been chosen as the hosts of the tournament after its sporting facilities were recently refurbished.
Chikwati also said that the invited teams have confirmed their participation and preparations for the event are at an advanced stage.
“Everything is now on course and the teams are ready to compete. The preparations are proceeding as planned,’’ Chikwati said.
The AHF Foundation is celebrating its first anniversary in Zimbabwe and decided to involve the youth in the commemoration of the foundation.
“We are celebrating our first anniversary in Zimbabwe and we decided to include the youth in the celebrations by bringing the youth together from the colleges and institutions of higher learning in Bulawayo.
“Statistics and studies have shown a high rate of HIV infections among the youth in colleges and that is the main reason we are targeting the youth through the services we offer. Celebrating our anniversary with the youth through sport is key to helping them combat HIV and Aids infections and create awareness of the scourge,” he said.
The objective is to introduce AHF services through sport such as condom promotion, HIV testing and counselling. — @ j_sihwa
