ZIMBABWE Prisons and Correctional Service is hosting a Family Week that started yesterday and will end on Friday to help rehabilitate inmates through increased interaction with the society.
The theme of the Family Week is ‘‘Building a professional correctional system in Africa: A Strategic Objective’’ in all member states. The officer-in-charge of Bulawayo Prisons, Superintendent Lungile Moyo said; “The constitution made sure that our prisons undergo a transitional and transformation process from being regarded as places for punishment and condemnation for offenders to being centres or homes for rehabilitation and empowerment,” he said.
Supt Moyo said the process of rehabilitating prisons was to help rehabilitate the inmates and the society.
“The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services realised that it cannot successfully achieve its constitutional obligation of rehabilitating the inmates without the involvement of the churches, relatives of inmates and the society at large thus they had to come up with events like the family week,” said Supt Moyo.
“During Family Week, inmates will be allowed unlimited visits by their relatives and friends. Visitors and inmates will enjoy longer periods of interactions at the discretion of officers in charge of prison.”
