Ugandan police arrest Rwanda genocide suspect

 

State owned New Vision daily reported yesterday  that Kwitonda alias John Tumwesigye was arrested on Thursday in the capital Kampala outside the Belgium embassy where he had gone to renew his passport.

Andrew Kaweesi, Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander confirmed the arrest but gave no            details.

The paper reported that there was a scuffle as Kwitonda attempted to resist arrest but he was overpowered by uniformed and plainclothes police.

He was whisked away to the immigration office where he recorded a statement before being returned to the Special Investigation Unit headquarters.

Daily Monitor, another local newspaper quoted Asuman Mugenyi, Ugandan police spokesman as saying that Kwitonda is wanted by the Brussels District Court.

He is wanted for genocide under article 136A Criminal Code of Belgium and articles 16 and 34 of the statute of 20th July 1990.

In 1994 he was accused of having taken part in acts of genocide in his own district of Ruhengeri Prefecture, Nyakabanda. By end of April to July 1994, it is alleged that he had taken part in acts of violence in Butare town.

He among others is accused of murder/genocide, bodily or mental harm, enforced transportation of children and group torture.

Kwitonda left Rwanda in 1994 and stayed in Bakavu Refugee camp in the Democratic Republic of Congo until 1997 when he left for Belgium where he lived as refugee with his family until 2000 when they acquired Belgium citizenship.

He has a joint registered company in Uganda with another Belgian national.
