Laura Denenga (25), or Laura Dee as she is known by her fans, launched her self-titled album at a packed show at the Book Cafe in Harare on Tuesday.
The UK-based singer/songwriter took to the stage with a local band consisting of members of jazz groups “The Other Four” and “Colour Blue” with whom she had only practiced twice.
Despite the little preparations the ensembles gave sterling performances in front of the audience which included veteran radio personality Daniel “The Godfather” Mackenzie (who was also master of ceremonies), Mabvuku-Tafara MP James Maridadi, National Arts Council of Zimbabwe Director Elvas Mari, former Big Brother Africa contestant Munyaradzi Chidzonga and mbira singer Hope Masike.
Laura Dee’s powerful soulful voice serenaded the crowd with a captivating fusion of pop, jazz and RnB as she belted out songs like “Island Boys”, “Crumbles and Falls”, “Gravitate” and “Pirates” which dealt with various themes including love, heartbreak and loyalty.
The multi-talented songstress played the keyboard on one of her tracks. She can also play the viola and the guitar.
During the show, Laura was given a surprise present by Mackenzie, who also happens to be her uncle, of a golden disc plate which had a background containing music notes from one of her songs and decorated in an artistic way.
The occasion also saw the auction of an autographed CD from Laura Dee which was bought by Chidzonga’s friend Simba Chigazira for US$210.
Commenting after the launch, Maridadi hailed the hard work and effort put by Laura Dee who began her music career when she was still a pupil at high school in Marondera ten years ago. “I was not surprised that she was launching an album because I have known her for years through her uncle and I even recommended her to some local studios at some time.
“Laura is not only talented but she took her time to polish her skills and make herself into the all-rounded musician,” he said.
Masike called the album “fresh and different” and said she hoped to meet Laura Dee when she visits the UK and plan a collaboration.
Laura has performed in various cities including Atlanta, London and Manchester and will also be launching her music in South Africa and in Dallas, US.
