British Ambassador to Zimbabwe Ms Catriona Laing has commended Zimbabwe for making efforts in promoting gender equality.

Speaking at the International Women’s Day dialogue at her residence in Harare on Monday, Ambassador Laing said Zimbabwe had ratified a number of international conventions to promote women empowerment and development.

The function was attended by Government officials, members of non-governmental organisations and women from different sectors.

Ambassador Laing said Zimbabwe had made meaningful gains in ending child marriages, offering opportunities for girls and ending sexual violence.

“As Zimbabwe and the rest of the world mark UN International Women’s Day, I would like us to bear in mind that Zimbabwe has made some impressive strides towards gender equality and women’s empowerment.

“The Government of Zimbabwe has ratified a number of international conventions whose objectives are to promote equality and development for women. Zimbabwe has made amendments to family, labour and inheritance laws to reflect gender equality priorities,” she said.
