As families gather, music fills the air and the festive spirit takes hold on Christmas Day, poetess Sithandazile Dube, popularly known as Um’Africakazi, has urged people to celebrate responsibly and stay safe throughout the holiday season.

While Christmas is a time of joy, sharing and togetherness, celebrations have often been marred by road accidents and crime, largely due to reckless behaviour during the festivities.

Speaking in an interview, Um’Africakazi extended warm Christmas wishes while cautioning against drinking and driving.

“I’d love to wish ama Africa wonke, as I like to call them, a Merry Christmas. I hope people enjoy the day with their families,” she said.

“I want to emphasise that people should avoid travelling in the evening, especially after consuming alcohol, because it puts them at risk of accidents.”

She encouraged revellers to choose safe spaces when drinking and to avoid driving under the influence.

“Let’s try to be in safe spaces when drinking, and if you have had one too many, find somewhere nearby safe to sleep. Drive only when you are sober. Don’t drink and drive because there are just too many accidents these days, and crime is also on the rise,” she said.

Um’Africakazi also warned that criminals often take advantage of the festive season, when many people travel or leave their homes unattended.

“Thieves take advantage of this time. If you’re travelling, make sure your home is secure. Also, avoid posting about your whereabouts on social media, because thieves now use this information. Please be safe, be secure, and enjoy this festive season,” she added.

On her own Christmas plans, the poetess said her day will be spent working, as is often the case for creatives during the holidays.

“A couple is getting married, and I’ll be the director of ceremonies for their Christmas union,” she said.
