MINISTER of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza, has applauded churches for going beyond their spiritual mandate by spearheading initiatives that drive economic development.
Speaking at the United Methodist Church Zimbabwe East Annual Conference (ZEAC) Women’s Business Expo recently held in Mutare, Minister Mugadza highlighted the vital role faith-based institutions are playing in advancing national progress.
“It is encouraging to see churches empowering their members to engage in productive economic activities and exhibitions that showcase Zimbabwe’s development,” he said.
He emphasised that such initiatives foster self-reliance, entrepreneurship, and community empowerment.
By creating platforms for women and other groups to contribute meaningfully to the economy, churches are helping to unlock local potential and strengthen the country’s overall growth trajectory.
He applauded the church’s efforts, and encouraged religious institutions to actively support economic empowerment and national development.
“The participation of churches in such programmes demonstrates the important role faith-based organisations can play in fostering sustainable livelihoods and community progress,” added Minister Mugadza.
Speaking at the same occasion, City of Mutare mayor, Councillor Simon Chabuka congratulated the organisers for providing a platform that showcases the achievements and potential of women in business.
He highlighted the significant role women entrepreneurs play in society, noting that they are, not only building successful businesses, but also supporting families, creating employment opportunities, reducing poverty, and contributing to stronger communities.
Councillor Chabuka urged participants to remain committed to their entrepreneurial journeys despite challenges.
He described the expo as an important opportunity for women to learn from one another, expand their networks, market their products, and establish partnerships to grow their businesses.
“City of Mutare reaffirms its commitment to support women entrepreneurs, recognising their contribution to the local economy. The success of women-owned businesses is directly linked to the city’s economic growth and development,” said Councillor Chabuka.
Rukwadzano Rwe Wadzimai president, Reverend Dr Mazvita Machinga of the United Methodist Church, thanked women who travelled from different districts to attend.
“Almost every district was represented. Although a few districts were unable to come, we believe they will join us next time. This is going to be an annual event for women, and next year we will invite our sister denominations to be part of this gathering. We want this to be ecumenical. We are happy with the good turnout and appreciate the commitment shown by all the women who came,” she said.
Rev Machinga said the event was meant to empower women and ensure inclusion.
“We are pleased that opportunities are available for everyone, including women living with disabilities and those using wheelchairs. Every woman deserves equal opportunities and inclusion. Well done women we need to start preparing for the 2027 Business Expo,” she said.
