TWO men from Umguza District have appeared in court facing a charge of attempted murder.
Gift Mhaka (32) of Hope Fountain and Mhlawempi Ndlovu (44) of Pinedale Douglasdale, Bulawayo, appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Mr Mark Dzira, facing allegations of attempting to murder Victor Mpofu.
Mhaka was, however, convicted of assault after he told the court that he did not intend to kill the complainant, while Ndlovu was acquitted after telling the court that he did not take part in the assault.
Mhaka will appear in court today (December 8) for sentencing.
Prosecuting, Mr Jethro Mada said that on October 27 at Village A1 Hope Fountain, Umguza, the complainant provoked the accused persons, condemning their family.
“This did not go well with the Mhaka, who picked a wooden axe handle and struck Mpofu on the forehead and also hit him several times on the back,” said Mr Mada.
The court further heard that Ndlovu, who was at the scene, also allegedly joined and assaulted the complainant with clenched fists, striking him several times on the body.
However, Ndlovu denied the allegations, stating that he was not involved in the assault in any way.
Following the attack, Mpofu reportedly lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital, where he received medical treatment. A report was made to the police, leading to the duo’s arrest.
The complainant was medically examined, but the medical report had not yet been issued by the doctor.
