Umguza Trust drills borehole for Malonka villagers

Chronicle Reporter
UMGUZA Community Share Ownership Trust has drilled a borehole for Malonka villagers in Insuza, Umguza District.

The Trust has pledged to drill five boreholes in each of the 15 wards in the district.

Malonka is one of the newest resettlement areas in Umguza and has been facing water challenges.

Umguza Community Share Ownership Trust on Friday drilled the borehole that is expected to serve the growing community.

Umguza Constituency coordinator Cde Paul Mthimkhulu said the Matabeleland North Provincial and Devolution Minister Richard Moyo, who is also the area MP held a meeting with Malonka villagers and listened to their concerns.

He said Umguza Constituency has several resettlements hence it needs more boreholes to ensure communities have access to water.

“We have so far drilled two boreholes under the Umguza Community Share Ownership Trust, one borehole was drilled in ward 11 in Malonka and another in Ward 5. Remember, former MP Cde Obert Mpofu facilitated that we have a vibrant trust to respond to the needs of the people during his time as our MP. But the trust and its rig had been hijacked by some people who wanted to convert it for personal use.

But Minister Moyo has resolved the matter and the rig is set to benefit all villages in Umguza Constituency. We have set a target of drilling five boreholes in each ward and we hope to be complemented by Government in ensuring there is access to water,” said Cde Mthimkhulu.

He said several development projects were lined up for the constituency to improve the quality of life for communities.

Malonka village chairman Mr Fletcher Ndlovu commended Minister Moyo.

“As Malonka community we want to commend our Minister of State who is also our MP for facilitating the drilling of a borehole in our community. We were having water challenges as a recently resettled community. While there is evidence of abundance of water underground, the boreholes in the areas are sparsely distributed resulting in people travelling long distances access clean water,” said Mr Ndlovu.
