UN, Govt launch 2011 Consolidated Appeal

mid-year revised Consolidated Appeal for humanitarian assistance, which has now gone up to US$488 million.
The Consolidated Appeal Process (CAP) is the humanitarian sector’s main tool for co-ordination, strategic planning, programming and fundraising.

United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Co-ordinator (RC/HC) to Zimbabwe, Mr Alain Noudéhou, said the process had contributed significantly to developing a more strategic approach to the provision of humanitarian aid and fostered closer co-operation between Govern-ment, donors, aid agencies, the Red Cross movement and non-governmental organisations.

Mr Noudéhou added that the mid-year review of the current appeal confirmed most of the priorities as outlined at the beginning of the year and called for an increase in humanitarian needs in the areas of food security.

He said the revision has been necessitated by changes in Zimbabwe’s humanitarian needs due to unforeseen emergencies in 2011.
“The crop and livestock assessment reports estimated that food production has slightly increased compared to the 2009/2010 season, with increases due to bigger acreage planted and timely agricultural inputs and extension support.

“However, achievement of the desired food security levels was threatened by a protracted dry spell which affected six out of 10 provinces this year. This new challenge, which negatively affected the recovery of food production in the country, has caused the food security related clusters to revise upwards their funding requirements for 2011.

“Other relatively smaller increases in requirements during the review were noted in the WASH and nutrition sectors.
“The total requirements for the 2011 Zimbabwe CAP have therefore been increased by $73 million from USD$415 million to USD$488 million.

“In particular, the strong engagement of key government officials in the Government of Zimbabwe in the preparation of the Mid-Year Review is highly appreciated and demonstrates the excellent spirit of collaboration between the government and its partners.

“Furthermore, I would like to thank the donor representatives for their strong and continued support to the CAP process.” he said.
