THE National Association of Secondary School Heads (NASH) has selected an Under-17 boys’ volleyball team for the Confederation of Schools Sport Association of Southern Africa (Cossasa) Games set for Lesotho next month. Nash called-up 12 boys at the just ended national volleyball finals at Inyathi High School to represent Zimbabwe.
Matthew Msamanyada and Mzingaye Hove from Matopo High School are the only players from Matabeleland in 12-man squad. This could be a confirmation of the low standards of the game in the whole region.
National Under-17 boys’ volleyball champions Mazowe High School have four players in the team.
These are Ngoni Munjere, Ashley Mapunga, Kudakwashe Kondo and Wesley Mufisire.
Visitation High School, the finalists provided Charles Shiniwa and Masimba Kudzerama.
Kudzai Chibwe and Frank Nyaguwa from Vimbai High School and Dzikamayi Victor from Hippo Valley High School were also included in the Under-17 squad.
Matabeleland North head-in-charge of volleyball, Nkululeko Zidla said the preparations programme will be finalised this weekend when all 10 provincial heads meet.
“All we have now is the Under-17 boys’ team, most details will be finalised this weekend when we meet with other heads-in-charge,” said Zidla.
It was the first time last weekend that a Matabeleland North rural school played host to the national volleyball championships. Zidla said the games had left a lasting legacy at the school which had a state- of- the- art facilities constructed for the games.
