MORE than a decade after a chance encounter on a festival stage sparked a transcontinental creative flame, Zimbabwean Afro-soul icon Tariro neGitare and Munich-based reggae powerhouse Jamaram are set to release, ‘Same Sun’ – the official anniversary song commemorating 30 years of the twin-city partnership between Harare and Munich.
The much-anticipated track will officially drop on all major streaming platforms on Friday, 19 June, before its live world premiere on 21 June at the prestigious Zamanand Festival in Munich.
The performance stands as a crown jewel in the German city’s official celebrations, marking three decades of political, social, and cultural co-operation between the two sister cities.
“The song is a reminder that although we may live under different skies, we are all living under the same sun. What started as a cultural exchange became genuine friendship. This project is proof that music can build bridges that last for generations,” said Tariro neGitare (real name Tariro Chaniwa).
For Tariro neGitare, the release of, ‘Same Sun’ is far more than a routine commission; it is the culmination of a journey that began fourteen years ago.
The roots of this collaboration trace back to the early 2010s.
In 2012, Jamaram – a celebrated eight-piece German reggae outfit – travelled to Zimbabwe for an intensive cultural exchange programme.
Orchestrated by a powerhouse coalition including the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA), the Zimbabwe German Society (Goethe-Zentrum Harare), the City of Munich, and Acoustic Nights, the tour saw the German band facilitating workshops, performing at HIFA, and embedding themselves within the local creative scene.
It was during these high-energy encounters that the band met Tariro.
The musical chemistry was instant, sparking a border-transcending friendship.
Shortly thereafter, Tariro and a cohort of fellow Zimbabwean musicians packed their bags for a sweeping tour of Germany with Jamaram, playing to sold-out crowds across the European nation.
Over the years, what began as a standard cultural exchange evolved into a deep, long-term artistic partnership.
Through collaborative recordings, artiste residencies, and subsequent international tours, the bond strengthened, heavily championed by the Magitare Africa Trust, which has consistently worked to nurture international opportunities for local talent while bolstering Zimbabwe’s cultural diplomacy.
Commissioned specifically for the 30th anniversary of the Harare-Munich twin-city relationship, ‘Same Sun’ serves as an auditory reflection of the core values that have sustained the civic partnership for three decades: mutual respect, unwavering solidarity, and a shared commitment to a better future.
The release acts not just as a showcase of musical prowess, but as a celebratory tribute to the institutions, artistes, organisers, and everyday citizens who have spent thirty years investing in the grassroots, people-to-people connections that keep geopolitical partnerships alive.
To anchor the release of the anthem, Tariro neGitare and Jamaram have embarked on a special anniversary tour across Germany this June, bringing the vibrant spirit of the Harare-Munich friendship directly to audiences across Bavaria.
For fans and cultural stakeholders who witnessed the preliminary exchange programmes back in 2012, the upcoming tour is a living, breathing testament to the enduring impact of international artistic collaboration.
The upcoming 2026 Germany tour will bring this enduring partnership directly to European audiences, kicking off with a solo performance by Tariro neGitare in Leutkirch on 20 June, followed by the official live premiere of “Same Sun” alongside Jamaram at Munich’s Zamanand Festival on 21 June, before heading to Starnberg on 25 June and wrapping up at the Chiemsee Festival on 27 June. – Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu
