THE United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) has come to the rescue of the cash strapped Gwanda Town after identifying the town as one of the 14 small towns that will benefit under its infrastructure rehabilitation funding programme.Gwanda Town has been classified under small towns and would benefit under the phase one programme which covers towns such as Chivhu, Zvishavane, Gokwe, Hwange, Mutoko and Mvurwi.
Gwanda Town Clerk Gilbert Mlilo said yesterday that Unicef would help in the rehabilitation of infrastructure such as water and sewer systems in the mining town.
“Unicef has identified 14 small towns to benefit under the programme and Gwanda Town is one of them,” Mlilo said.
Last week, Gwanda Town Council offices were inundated by representatives of companies that want to undertake the rehabilitation work.
The contractors were taken through a pre-tender site visit to have a better understanding of the situation on the ground.
“Those interested in being contracted would prepare and submit their quotations to Unicef offices in Harare before the closing date which is end of next month. Unicef is responsible for the adjudication and awarding of the tenders,” said Mlilo.
Some Gwanda Town residents especially in the high density areas are faced with challenges in accessing water as their houses are situated on high ground.
Most water and sewer pipes in the town are aged resulting in increased burst pipes and sewer blockages. Council has said it would prioritise rehabilitation of sewer and water infrastructure working closely with the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa).
