UNICEF Deputy Country Representative, Mrs Zeinab Adam, has commended the implementation of the Enhanced Resilience for Vulnerable Households in Zimbabwe (ERVHIZ) project, highlighting its role in enabling inclusive development that leaves no one and no place behind.
The project, which was implemented from 2022, is now coming to an end. Mrs Adam noted that the initiative has restored dignity for women through the establishment of piped water systems.
She revealed that more than 22,500 households in Matabeleland South Province have benefited from the project.
“The project has transformed the lives of thousands of households, including women and children. Over 22,500 households now have access to clean and safe water through the piped water scheme, ensuring that children, especially girls, no longer have to walk long distances to fetch water, miss school, or expose themselves to dangers,” said Mrs Adam.
She added that the project has also improved pupil retention in schools through the provision of nutritious food in learning institutions.
Mrs Adam stated that the project benefited nearly 15,000 people who were threatened by the El Niño-induced drought.
As the ERVHIZ project comes to an end, she expressed hope that its transfer to the Government will achieve similar results.
