GOVERNMENT has identified a wide range of legacy projects for Mwenezi District in Masvingo Province ahead of the 47th Independence celebrations to be held at Rutenga Growth Point in 2027.
The projects, which include the completion of stalled developments, construction of new infrastructure and rehabilitation of key roads, are aimed at transforming the district while improving the livelihoods of local communities.
They form part of the Second Republic’s strategy to ensure that communities hosting national events benefit from lasting socio-economic development.
Presenting the post-Cabinet briefing, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Zhemu Soda said Cabinet considered a report presented by Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe on behalf of the Chairman of the Cabinet Committee on State Occasions and National Monuments, Vice President Kembo Mohadi.
“The nation is being informed that the 47th Independence Celebrations will be held at Rutenga Growth Point in Mwenezi District. Accordingly, Government identified various projects which will be implemented as part of the legacy projects for the 2027 Independence Celebrations,” said Minister Soda.
He said the programme will include the completion of 13 stalled projects, implementation of 54 devolution-funded projects and several new legacy developments across the district.
Among the flagship projects is the construction of a 16 000-seater stadium complete with changing rooms and ablution facilities.
Government will also construct and furnish 16 science laboratories and 39 satellite schools, while computer laboratories will be equipped and solarised to improve access to digital learning.
The programme also includes the rehabilitation of liberation war heritage sites, including the Hurodzevasikana Battle Site, as well as the Provincial and District Heroes Acres.
In support of liberation war veterans, Government will construct 10 houses for veterans of the liberation struggle in Mwenezi District and establish a Youth Service and Vocational Training Centre.
Major investment has also been earmarked for road infrastructure, with rehabilitation and construction planned for the 150-kilometre Rutenga-Boli-Sango Road, the 45-kilometre Ngundu-Tanganda Road and the 84,2-kilometre Rutenga-Zvishavane Road.
Government will further continue works to complete the remaining 34 kilometres of the Masvingo-Beitbridge Road and the 12-kilometre Makwi-Neshuro Road.
To strengthen water security and rural livelihoods, Government, through the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency and its partners, will drill 105 boreholes, install 40 pumps, establish 50 solar-powered water schemes and maintain 1 500 existing boreholes.
Working with the Ministry of Agriculture, Government will also establish 21 Village Business Units to boost agricultural production and rural economic development.
Minister Soda said Government would undertake robust resource mobilisation to ensure the successful implementation of the projects.
He said the legacy projects are part of the Second Republic’s broader development agenda aimed at transforming communities across Zimbabwe while ensuring that no one and no place is left behind.
