LONDON. — MANCHESTER UNITED’S calamitous season is affecting the English Premier League’s worldwide brand and causing viewers to switch off, claims the competition’s chief executive Richard Scudamore.
The Red Devils have experienced a dramatic slump under David Moyes this term and trail league leaders Chelsea by 18 points.
Having suffered 10 league defeats in 31 matches, Moyes has incurred the wrath of some United supporters.
And Scudamore has conceded United’s troubled title defence is taking a hit on audience figures.
“It’s a double-edged sword,” said Scudamore.
“When your most popular club isn’t doing as well, that costs you interest and audience in some places.
“There are lots of fans around the world who wish Manchester United were winning it again.
“But you have to balance that off against, generally, we’re in the business of putting on a competition and competition means people can compete.”
The Premier League however has showed no signs of slowing down, and it is expected to pocket around £2bn from overseas television deals between 2013 and 2016. — The London Express.
