Mukudzei Chingwere in HONDE VALLEY
Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga has called on Zimbabweans to embrace unity, love and mutual care, saying these values remain central to national development and the pursuit of improved livelihoods for all.
Speaking yesterday in Honde Valley, Manicaland, at the burial of Mrs Callista Chimhini, sister to Sports, Arts and Recreation Minister Anselem Sanyatwe, he said the spirit of neighbourliness, solidarity and selflessness that characterised the liberation struggle should continue to anchor the country’s development trajectory.
He paid tribute to Mrs Chimhini, describing her as a committed nurse whose contribution to the liberation struggle helped sustain freedom fighters through medical support. Mrs Chimhini was a nurse during the liberation struggle.
“We are here to mourn our sister. She left behind a good legacy, a legacy of love. She was a hero of service, always helping others. I, myself, can testify to her love,” said VP Chiwenga.
“She was a nurse. She began her nursing work during the liberation struggle, and I operated in this area in 1978.
“I passed through here while travelling to Chihota and came back through this same place in 1978. During the liberation struggle, she used to provide comrades with medicines, and that was a huge contribution. Let us love one another in this short time we are living on earth.”
VP Chiwenga said Mrs Chimhini was a devout Christian who also worked hard for her family.
“Her husband here said he was living with a holy woman. Let us help one another. I can see there are people of my age here, so let us remain united and work together to develop the country we fought for. A country develops when we are united. Let us remain faithful to good deeds,” said VP Chiwenga.
Mr David Chimhini, the husband of the late nurse, described her as a loving and God-fearing woman whose life was marked by faith, kindness and devotion to her family.
He also expressed gratitude to the VP and other senior Government officials who attended the burial for standing with the family during its time of grief and loss.
VP Chiwenga was accompanied by his wife, Colonel Miniyothabo Chiwenga.
Also in attendance were Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Felix Mhona, Zanu PF Politburo member Lieutenant General (Retired) Engelbert Rugeje, among other senior Government officials.
