The star-studded reggae event features amongst several other artistes and sound systems, Redemption Sound, The Transit Crew, Elder Ras Trevor Hall, Lady Thanda, Crucial Mix Band, Ultra Sonic International, Digital 1, Ital Fyah.
Jamaican-born reggae sensation Ras Trevor Hall, arguably the country’s most celebrated “Elder” as far as reggae music is concerned is upbeat that the event will be a true Rastafarian celebration of unity.
Mr Muffin as he is popularly known by reggae/dancehall masses is the founder of the legendary Startime Supapawa Sound System which made waves in the 1980s and 1990s and paved the way for several other renowned reggae sound systems.
The celebrated DJ who’s Sound System was born before Jah B’s Stereo One and Jar Dzuwa’s Unity Sound in 1985 got the honours of taking the decks for Buju Banton’s performance at the Meikles Hotel when he came to Zimbabwe in 1998.
The karateka-cum-DJ who also founded the country’s first reggae TV show, Rockers Vibes, in 1999 together with ZBC engineer Ataman Makotore has been hibernating in South Africa for over five years before his return in time for the Unity Day celebrations.
“I returned home to spend the festive season with my family as well as take part in the Unity Day celebrations here at the Basement,” Mr Muffin said.
“I have new music for all the youths and original reggae sound for all the elders; I mean real reggae from the 1960s to the 1980s.” Mr Muffin said the gig will show unity among Zimbabwean reggae artistes, DJs and Sound Systems.
He said that people should promote peace, love and harmony through this historical unity holiday.
“Through unity there is nothing we can’t achieve. With a united nation we can become an example for the whole world to follow,” he said.
“We have brought together over 20 reggae acts to celebrate Unity Day under the theme ‘One Zimbabwe, One Love’ and we are very excited to be hosting Mr Muffin exclusively here at The Basement,” said
Christinah Chindiro, proprietor of The Basement club.
Another big party is at Red Fox Hotel where UK-based DJ Jah Hanief will be hosting another star-studded dancehall event.
The reggae event also dubbed “Unity Splash” stars several DJs from all around the region including Brian Kay from Dublin, Ireland, Penthouse from Texas, USA, Black Identity from Beira, Mozambique, and Jah Flex from Gaborone, Botswana.
A number of renowned local reggae and dancehall artistes are also featuring on the event such as Mic Inity, Guspy Warrior, Jiggaz, Dee-Jay Garry B, Lady Squanda, Smylie and Godfather Templeman among several others.
