THE Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (Zimche) has granted provisional approval for the establishment of the University of Matopo.

The university, an initiative of the Brethren in Christ Church (BICC), must meet specific guidelines, including establishing a governing body and developing the necessary physical infrastructure, by January 2026.

The BICC has a strong history of contributing to the country’s education sector.

Located in Matabeleland South, the university will be the province’s fourth higher and tertiary education institution, joining Gwanda State University, Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Polytechnic and the Adventist-run Solusi University.

The BICC operates three well-regarded high schools in Matabeleland South — Matopo High School, Mtshabezi High School, and Wanezi High School — which have produced many prominent figures across Zimbabwe.

The University of Matopo said in a statement:

“We are thrilled to announce that the University of Matopo has received official approval! This milestone is a testament to the tireless efforts of everyone involved and marks a significant achievement for the Brethren in Christ Church and the entire community.

“The University of Matopo will undoubtedly bring unparalleled opportunities for growth, development, and access to quality education. We look forward to witnessing the transformative impact this institution will have on our community and beyond.”

Zimche chief executive officer, Professor Kuzvinetsa Dzvimbo, confirmed the decision to approve the university’s establishment in a letter to Professor Henry Sibanda, representing the budding tertiary institution.

“We are pleased to inform you that the application by the proposed University of Matopo to register was approved by the Higher Education Quality Assurance Committee (HEQAC) of the Zimche.

“The proposed University of Matopo is hereby granted Provisional Registration. The Provisional Registration shall be valid for one year (12 Months) from the date of issue, 10th of January 2025, to the 11th of January 2026,” Prof Dzvimbo wrote.

He said that the provisional registration authorises the University of Matopo to establish a governing body and begin or continue developing its physical facilities. Professor Dzvimbo said that the university must also begin or continue assembling academic resources and submit its proposed academic programmes to Zimche for consideration and approval.

“Please note that the institution shall only recruit students after specific approval by the Zimche to do so.

On or before the expiry of the provisional registration licence, the University of Matopo shall apply to the Zimche for final registration by submitting to the Chief Executive Officer the prescribed form accompanied by such documents and fee as shall be prescribed.

“The Zimche congratulates you on this achievement and hopes that you will achieve the aims and objectives for which the private institution is to be established,” Prof Dzvimbo said.
