THE first phase of the $120 million housing project by the country’s third largest platinum mine — Unki Mines — is almost complete with employees expected to be moving into the houses early November.
Unki Mines is building 950 houses for its workers at the 1 105 hectare Impali Source Farm, 5km south west of Shurugwi. The mine, which is wholly-owned by the world’s largest platinum producer Anglo-American, has been rattled by plummeting prices on the world market over the past three years, which has resulted in delays in completing the project due to funding constraints.
Unki Mine hopes to complete building 350 houses under the first phase.
“The first phase of the housing project is almost complete, with 200 houses ready for occupation. We are looking to having a total of 350 houses to be completed in the second quarter of 2016,” said the mine’s chief financial officer Mr Colin Chibafa.
