An unlicensed driver has appeared in court for allegedly knocking down a pedestrian who was walking on the side of the road, killing him on the spot. Kumbirayi Zowa (28) of Number 14530 Hatcliffe, Harare, appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe yesterday facing charges of driving without a driver’s licence, failing to stop after an accident and culpable homicide.

He was advised to apply for bail at the High Court and is expected back in court on March 16.

Prosecutor Mrs Idah Mateke-Maromo alleged that on Sunday, Zowa was driving a white Toyota Corolla registration number ACD 0612 along Scam Way in Hatcliffe.

He was travelling due east and along the way he hit a pedestrian who was walking on the side of the road and he died on the spot.

It is alleged that Zowa did not stop after realising that he had been involved in an accident.

He was chased by another motorist who was following behind and was caught after 400 metres from the crime scene.

Zowa allegedly abandoned his vehicle and rushed into a nearby bush, where he was eventually apprehended.
