Dungunye was later taken to hospital by well-wishers after being found lying unconscious along Plymouth Road the following day.
He died from the injuries he sustained in the accident.
Tirivangani appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo last week and was convicted of culpable homicide, driving without a licence, failing to render assistance after an accident and failing to report an accident.
Prosecutor Mr Oscar Madhume said Tirivangani left the scene of the accident along Jason Moyo Avenue with Dungunye and a police officer, saying they were going to hospital.
The accident occurred on November 9 around 7pm. A policeman arrived at the scene and Tirivangani volunteered to take Dungunye, who had sustained head injuries, to Parirenyatwa Hospital.
After the policeman dropped off, Tirivangani diverted route and dumped Dungunye. Tigere, who had taken down Tirivangani’s vehicle registration numbers, followed up at several hospitals with Dungunye’s relatives. They eventually found him at Harare Central Hospital. The police opened an assault case thinking Dungunye had been attacked by robbers. Dungunye was later transferred to Parirenyatwa Hospital due to the seriousness of the injuries where he later died.
Tigere narrated to the police what had happened and gave them Tirivangani’s vehicle registration number and investigations led to the arrest of Tirivangani’s brother, Gibson, who is the owner of the vehicle. Gibson implicated Tirivangani as the person who was driving the vehicle on the day in question.
