Munyaradzi Doma in Zvishavane
A security guard from Zvishavane will perform 350 hours of community service after he was convicted of 10 counts of theft. Morgan Marovha (63), who stole from premises where he guarded, had initially been slapped with a 28-month jail term.
Zvishavane magistrate Mr Shepherd Mjanja suspended six months on condition that he is not convicted of a similar offence in the coming three years. The court set aside a further 10 months on condition that he worked for no pay at Makwasha Primary School. The 10 counts were treated as one for the purposes of sentencing, hence the remaining 12 months were suspended on condition that he paid all the complainants a total of $2 000.
In sentencing Marovha, Mr Mjanja said while he had a clean criminal record and was earning a mere $50, and had four children to look after, he had betrayed the trust bestowed on him as a security guard.
Mr Mjanja asked: “So who will guard the guard?”
This was after it had been proved that on several occasions, Marovha stole several items from Dashley Complex in Mandava, where he was employed as a security guard.
