An Interpol-based police officer will perform 140 hours of community service at Hopley Poly Clinic for bashing his wife after she burnt his clothes. Kuziva Matinyadze (29) told Mbare magistrate Ms Anita Tshuma that he acted out of anger when his wife Mercy Chatikobo (35) burnt his clothes.

“She burnt my clothes when I did not return home. So when I got home the next day she had burnt my clothes and this angered me.”

Ms Tshuma had sentenced Matinyadze to seven months in prison before suspending three months of the sentence for five years on condition he does not commit a similar offence.

A further four months were suspended on condition he performs 140 hours of community service.

In passing sentence Ms Tshuma considered that Matinyadze was a first offender who had pleaded guilty to Domestic Violence charges.

“You are a first offender and a family man. However, the offence has become prevalent and a deterrent sentence should be imposed.

“ You are a police officer who is supposed to uphold the law not to break it. Such conduct should not be condoned and community service is therefore an appropriate sentence,” she said.
