Unsung heroines of local rugby

Paul Munyuki Sports Correspondent
THEY have been writing great success stories, but it appears no one wants to take notice, including their parent ministry.

They are the Zimbabwe Under-18 schools girls rugby team. While everyone who has been doing well is getting a pat on the back, no one is talking about them.

Well, the reality is that they have been doing something special. They made history recently when they finished second, the best performance by a Zimbabwean or foreign team in the South African Youth Weeks, recently.

They were the first Zimbabwean rugby side to win all three matches in the South African Youth Weeks in 10 years — the last being the boys’ Under-18 Class of 2007.

They were the first foreign side in the history of the festival to win all three games. They became only the first side to win all three games in their third season of appearance in the South African festival and, above all, they hold the best record by any foreign team in the Youth Weeks with a 77.78 percent success rate.

They have only lost two of their nine appearances Down South. Rugby has traditionally been known as a sport for the rich and affluent in Zimbabwe, especially when it comes to playing for the junior national sides.

But the girls rugby side is different. This is a bunch of success-hungry children who come from diverse backgrounds, from schools like Vainona, Goromonzi, and Girls High.

The girls’ side, coached by Nsikelelo “Sykes” Sibanda, are definitely the best rugby product to have come out of Zimbabwean rugby over the last three years.
