Chiefs here have implored the Government to increase food rations to avert hunger in the arid district as more villagers grapple with effects of last year’s drought.
Chief Tshovani (Felix Mundau) told The Herald that most families in his area were facing starvation after last season’s widespread crop failure.
“As you are aware, this wasn’t a good year for most farmers in Chiredzi. They tried prioritising the production of small grains, but the rains were not sufficient to sustain crop growth,” he said.
“Now there is drought, villagers are visiting my place daily asking for food assistance. Some do get food from social welfare, but their families are struggling.”
Chief Gudo (Karukai Mavivi) also weighed in calling for investment in the revamping of irrigation schemes in his area to boost food security at household level.
“Surely there is poverty in the communities, the villagers are in need of more food aid. Given that the price of bread and flour is beyond reach of many, their main menu is now sadza.
“So if you eat sadza in the morning, afternoon and evening, the rations from social welfare will no longer be sufficient to sustain a family until the next consignment is delivered,” said Chief Gudo.
He said that rehabilitation of irrigation schemes such as Dendere and St Joseph would ease pressure on reliance on Government aid.
“Villagers are not lazy, they just need capacitation in times like these and they will be able to fend for themselves. We are very delighted that Plan International is helping us revamp our irrigation schemes and this would go a long way in fostering sustainable development,” he said.
Chief Sengwe weighed in saying prices for many commodities was beyond reach of many villagers.
“Most basic commodities are now very expensive and villagers cannot afford them. Government should incentivise some of the businesspeople in rural communities so that they can sell affordable goods,” said Chief Sengwe.
