Upskilling key to unlocking mining sector growth

PLAYERS in the mining sector have been urged to continuously upgrade their skills to remain relevant, competitive and innovative in an ever-evolving industry.

The call was made at a recent event hosted by Mine Eazy, where the firm honoured academic achievers within its organisation who successfully completed studies in mining and business-related disciplines.

The ceremony recognised both employees and associates who have invested in education and are using their expertise to contribute to economic growth.

Mine Eazy director Mr Khumbula Dube said skills development remains a cornerstone in building strong and capable human capital within the mining industry.

“There is no doubt that upskilling is critical in developing a strong workforce. In mining, some acquire claims but lack the knowledge to fully develop them. While small-scale operations may survive with limited expertise for a short time, growth demands proper skills and education,” he said.

He emphasised the importance of formal training in areas such as mining geology, engineering and business management, noting that knowledge plays a key role in the success of business enterprises.

“You can only be what you know. This event is meant to recognise those who have taken it upon themselves to improve academically in fields like mining, marketing, finance and strategic management. It also serves as motivation for others to follow suit,” he said.

Mr Dube added that encouraging continuous learning among employees not only benefits individuals, but also strengthens companies and the mining sector at large.

“To the graduates, we say congratulations. This does not only mark the end of one chapter but the beginning of something bigger, bolder and full of possibilities. You have earned this moment as you have shown resilience, discipline and passion.

“We don’t just employ people, we nurture talent. We believe in creating a platform where every skill and idea can be developed and put into action. Whether your strength is in sales, logistics, technology, business strategy or problem solving, we are proud to be the place where you can showcase who you are and what you can do,” he said.

He said initiatives such as the recognition ceremony promote a culture of lifelong learning, which is essential for improving productivity and driving innovation.

“We reaffirm our commitment to supporting staff development initiatives as part of efforts to build a resilient and competitive mining sector,” said Dube.

Guest of honour Benson Mukandiwa also encouraged workers to embrace learning and seek guidance from experienced professionals.

“Never get tired of asking questions. It is better to appear uninformed for a moment than to remain uninformed for life. Learning from those ahead of you is critical for growth,” he said.

Graduands at the event said advancing their studies had strengthened their skills, improved their confidence and enhanced their understanding of their work.

They highlighted the importance of continuous learning in adapting to changes in the industry and urged others to invest in education to unlock growth opportunities.
