Sikhumbuzo Moyo in Hwange
CONSTRUCTION works have resumed along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road, with contractor Asphalt carrying out gravelling works at the 40-kilometre peg from Hwange town.
The resumption of works is expected to bring relief to motorists who have endured deteriorating sections of the key highway linking Bulawayo and the resort city of Victoria Falls.
The highway is also an important route for tourism, trade and the movement of goods and people.
Asphalt is now on site, with heavy machinery being used to undertake gravelling works as efforts to rehabilitate the road gather momentum.
The development comes after Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona told Parliament that funds had been released to facilitate payment of the eight contractors engaged to work on the highway.
The Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road is among the major highways being rehabilitated by Government under its ongoing road infrastructure development programme.
The release of funds is expected to enable contractors to return to site and accelerate construction works along the highway.
The road is strategically important to the country’s tourism sector as it connects Bulawayo, the country’s second-largest city, to Victoria Falls, one of Zimbabwe’s major tourist destinations.
It is also a key trade corridor, carrying heavy traffic between the southern parts of the country and Matabeleland North.
