The cumulative figures since the beginning of the year up to the 18th of this month are 418 771 cases of common diarrhoea and 259 deaths.
“There were 5 196 cases (48.6 percent) and five deaths reported among children under five years of age,” said Head of Epidemiology and Disease Control in the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare, Dr Portia Manangazira, in the Weekly Report on Epidemic — Prone Diseases, Deaths and Public Health Events.
“The deaths were reported at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals with two, Chitungwiza Central Hospital with two, Mpilo Central Hospital recorded one, Kwekwe District Hospital in Midlands Province one and Makoni District Hospital in Manicaland Province also one case.
“The provinces which reported the highest number of diarrhoea cases were Mashonaland East having 1 760 and Mashonaland Central with 1 506,” said Dr Manangazira.
She said there were no suspected cases of cholera reported since 20 June 2012.
“A total of 4 504 malaria cases and three deaths were reported this week. Of the cases reported 1 008 (22.4 percent) and no deaths, were from the under five years of age.
“The deaths were reported at Chiredzi District Hospital (1), Mwenezi District Hospital (1) in Masvingo Province and Mutoko District Hospital in Mashonaland East Province (1),” said Dr Manangazira.
She said the provinces which reported the highest number of malaria cases were Manicaland (2 446) and Mashonaland West (852).
“The cumulative figures for malaria are 311 238 and 201 deaths,” said Dr Manangazira.
Dr Manangazira said clinical dysentery cases reported this week numbered 1 264 with no deaths.
“Of the reported cases 354 (28 percent) were from the under five years of age. The provinces which reported the highest number of dysentery cases were Mashonaland Central (220) and Mashonaland West (211). The cumulative figures for dysentery are 38 544 and 20 deaths,” she said.
