AFTER spending about US$7 000 to sign Sadney Urikhob, Dynamos had to wait until Match Day 13 to celebrate the Namibian import’s solitary goal since his much-hyped arrival.
The 32-year-old Namibian striker joined the Glamour Boys at the start of the year, alongside Ghanaian Frederick Ansah Botchway.
Temptation Chiwunga from JDR Stars in South Africa, Nomore Chinyerere (FC Platinum), Freddy Alick and Tinotenda Makwinja were also part of the new arrivals.
Sadly, a shopping spree that was expected to boost the Chibuku Super Cup winners squad, ahead of their voyage in the CAF Confederation Cup, has somehow proved to be a ‘recipe for disaster’.
For years, Dynamos seem to have developed a deep love for expensive experiments.
After spending big, most of the imports, whose record is often not so easy to track, have largely turned into huge disappointments.
And the latest such acquisition is Urikhob, who has a mere goal to his name in 13 games.
His goal came in their 2-1 victory over PSL debutants Arenel Movers at Rufaro, five months after his arrival.
His deal is said to have been brokered by an agent, who approached the technical team with the player’s video clips.
However, Genesis Mangombe and his team were not charmed by the videos as they seemed to stretch over many years and were from different leagues.
This publication understands that the agent, with the backing of an executive member, insisted on the player coming for physical trials, despite the coaches’ concerns.
Throughout the trial period, the striker who has had stints in the Namibian and South African leagues, still failed to charm the technical team.
However, despite openly expressing their displeasure, the striker was still signed without the coaches’ consent.
“Sometimes we have no choice but to be blunt about situations because at the end of the day fingers are pointed at the wrong people,” revealed a technical member.
“He is a disciplined player but we need more than just that, we want goals.
“If we were getting the goals, we would have not been in this predicament but we have no choice.”
Some of the names Mangombe had put on his wish list were Walter Musona and Mthokozisi Msebe.
“As a coach, you need to be able to make do with what you have, we have embraced Urikhob and he is improving with each game,” said Mangombe.
