THE United States Embassy in Harare celebrated the 249th anniversary of American Independence with a vibrant reception on Wednesday at the Ambassador’s residence in Harare. The event brought together senior Zimbabwean government officials, members of the diplomatic community, business leaders, civil society representatives, academics, and alumni of U.S. exchange programmes.

The Guest of Honour, Hon. Prof. Dr. Amon Murwira, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Zimbabwe, joined U.S. Ambassador Pamela M. Tremont in marking the historic occasion, which also commemorated 45 years of diplomatic relations between the United States and Zimbabwe.

In her keynote address, Ambassador Tremont reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to Zimbabwe’s prosperity, emphasising the importance of democratic governance and expanded economic opportunities.

“That is what we celebrate today. The opportunity for a stronger U.S.-Zimbabwe relationship. The opportunity for a deal that benefits both sides. The opportunity to protect the human rights our two countries’ founders fought and died for while achieving the economic prosperity they could only dream of,” she stated.

Ambassador Tremont highlighted significant achievements by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in Zimbabwe, underlining the United States’ intention to build upon these investments by expanding trade.

“The Administration’s goal is to increase U.S. exports to and trade with Africa,” she said.

She stressed that for two-way trade to grow and for new investments to thrive, it is essential for Zimbabwe to create an enabling environment for companies.

“A healthy investment climate is all-inclusive: it’s fiscally transparent, applies unbiased rule of law, respects constitutional rights and property rights, and draws on the innovation of its young people,” she concluded.

Minister Murwira echoed the sentiments expressed by Ambassador Tremont, commending the ongoing engagements between the two nations.

He emphasised the importance of deepening commercial ties and fostering collaboration that attracts investment.

“Zimbabwe looks forward to deepening relations and expansion of bilateral cooperation with the United States of America,” he stated.

He further applauded US companies that have established operations in Zimbabwe, assuring them and all foreign investors of the government’s willingness to support their business expansion efforts.

“We would like to assure all these and all foreign companies in Zimbabwe that the Zimbabwe government is willing to assist them to expand their operations,” he added.

The reception not only celebrated the historical ties between the US and Zimbabwe but also laid the groundwork for potential economic partnerships moving forward.

With a focus on mutual benefits and respect for rights, both Ambassador Tremont and Minister Murwira expressed optimism for a future characterised by increased collaboration and prosperity.

As the event concluded, attendees were left with a renewed sense of possibility for the US-Zimbabwe relationship, underscoring the importance of dialogue, investment, and shared values in building a brighter economic future for both nations. – Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu
