Renowned United States playwright and theatre director James Carey who is on a tour of Africa was at the Reps Theatre for a one man show dubbed “Coming to Zimbabwe – Africa’s Journey to Self Discovery and Renewal in Zimbabwe” over the weekend.
In his play he narrates his journey to this country and how he used to have bad perceptions until he finally discovered that some of the stories he heard were untrue in comical ways.
Carey said he had an awesome experience and was greatly overwhelmed by the turn out of people.
“Thank you very much for your support and l would like to come and do more things for the theatrical community here in Zimbabwe,” he said.
Carey said his two-week stay in the country enabled him to host workshops for people in theatrical fields.
“l have been teaching drama workshops around the country and it was nice to work with the National Institute of Allied Arts in Zimbabwe as it is part of their Teacher Training Outreach Program,” he said.
This week he will be in Malawi where he will be on stage at the Madsoc Theatre in Lilongwe before he goes to South Africa for a show in Cape at the Theatre Arts Admin Collective.
In 2012 Carey left his hometown Los Angeles and travelled to Zimbabwe to work with school children and teach drama classes.
This was a life-changing adventure for him working and traveling in Africa and he wrote his overwhelming and adventurous experiences down, and adapted it for the stage as a one man show.
In 2013 Carey’s debut show was at the Harare International Festival of Arts and the show was a great success as it was extended after the festival at the Reps Theatre.
