YASIIN Bey most definitely believes it is his human right to travel wherever he wants in the world.
But as the famous American rapper, Mos Def, found out when he was arrested in Mzansi on 14 January, South African authorities do not agree!
According to reports, Mos Def – also known as Bey or Dante Terrell Smith – travelled to SA in 2013 as an American citizen but he and his family overstayed their visas.
However, Mos Def insists that he was detained for using his “World Passport” as he tried to leave Cape Town airport, which is a “passport” provided by an organisation called the World Service Authority.
Apparently the World Service Authority believes it is every human’s right to travel anywhere they want in the world.
Unfortunately South Africa, like most other countries, does not recognise this as a legal document.
In a briefing by the Department of Home Affairs, officials stressed that they are simply enforcing the country’s immigration laws.
It said the rapper will appear for trial on 8 March 2016 to answer to immigration charges.
Under the hashtag #NoMorePartiesinSA, Mos Def tweeted: Please tell them no more parties in SA/Hey Home Affairs I don’t need to stay/Why don’t I feel safe/This isn’t an expression of fear.
